A Book by Donna Tartt
How do you even start a book review of The Goldfinch?
I barely knew how to start reading the book, and I’ll explain that in further detail in a moment. Should you even write a book review of The Goldfinch? I don’t mean to start by blowing so much smoke up the book’s, or Donna Tartt’s backside, but when you read a book like that I think you go through some sort of change, and maybe even a large one if you’re paying close enough attention.
Writing Funny…and Not so Funny
It is not an easy thing to do, in a way.
If you’ve read articles about successful writers, and probably many articles by non-successful writers, you may have ingested something along the lines of, “Don’t write out of your genre… ever.” And really, I think all of us writer people want to have some success at what we do. Hopefully, make a living off the writing itself, quit our day jobs, all of that. So that’s sitting there in the back of your mind as you contemplate stepping out of your lane… from a moving car… on the autobahn… doing one-twenty… into gravel… and broken glass… wearing a salt suit.
A Book by Tiffany Daniel
Tiffany McDaniel debuted with this book. I remember reading Gillian Flynn’s, Sharp Objects, and thinking how tasty her sentences were with tone for salt and story for pepper. Just resonated with me. I admired it. Tiffany McDaniel writes every sentence like a poem. Her sentences are like a rich dessert, not like a salty steak, and the story starts to go down just like a cheesecake too rich to finish… but you must.
